After Your Consultation: 7 Steps to Protect Your Skin Plan (Consultation Aftercare)
By Glenn Emery Skincare | July 26, 2026
Downtown Martinez / Main Street historic district near the waterfront and county courthouse

One of our consultation clients told us Glenn did a quick demo on their hand first, and seeing no reaction helped them feel confident moving forward. That same idea is the number one rule for consultation aftercare. Follow the start-time plan we set for your products and actives, and don’t “help” by adding extra steps for the first 24 to 72 hours. When you keep it simple, your skin stays calm, and we can actually tell what’s working.
Step 1 to 3: The first 24 to 48 hours after your Consultation (keep it calm)
Most of the trouble we see after a consult comes from moving too fast. In Downtown Martinez, it’s easy to walk out into bright sun and salty waterfront breeze and think, “I’m fine.” But your skin might be adjusting to a new plan, and calm skin always responds better.
Quick rule: In the first 24 to 72 hours, stick to the start times we gave you, patch test where we advised, and pause other actives until we say go.
Step 1: Follow the product timeline exactly
If we recommended new products, we usually stagger them so you don’t start everything on day one. That way, if your skin gets cranky, we can pinpoint the cause fast. If you’re doing a consult because you’re planning Plasma Lift or Fibroblast, that timeline matters even more. It’s part of getting your skin ready and making sure you’re a good fit.
Step 2: Patch test before full-face (yes, even if you’re excited)
We’re big on patch tests because we see a lot of sensitive skin, allergy-prone skin, and reactive moments that people didn’t expect. If we told you to patch test, do it on a small spot first and give it time. The goal is confidence, not guessing.
Step 3: Avoid heat and heavy sweat for 24 to 72 hours
If your plan includes actives or you’re prepping for a stronger service, we generally recommend you skip hot tubs, pools, long sun exposure, and intense exercise for the first 24 to 72 hours. Martinez summer days get bright fast. Try outdoor walks earlier in the day, and save the harder workouts for when your skin has settled.
Step 4: Your first week, the “don’t sabotage it” checklist
A good consult should feel clear and doable, not like you’re juggling ten new steps. We hear it a lot. People leave feeling like their skin is clean and “radiates, ” and we want you to keep that momentum going all week.
Keep doing
- Gentle cleansing. Lukewarm water beats hot water this week.
- Moisturize consistently. Barrier first, always.
- Daily SPF. Reapply if you’re outside around Main Street, near the courthouse, or anywhere the sun hits you for more than a quick errand.
Avoid for now
- Random “new” actives you weren’t using before. No surprise retinol, no extra acids, no strong scrubs.
- Picking, over-exfoliating, or trying to smooth texture with friction.
- Long, hot showers and steam. Heat can turn mild irritation into a bigger flare.
If you’re a commuter or you’ve got kids and a packed schedule, this is the week to go simple. Two to three core steps done consistently beats a complicated routine you can’t keep up with.
Step 5: Products and habits that protect your results (without overdoing it)
After a consult, you don’t need a crowded counter. You need the right basics, used the right way. We’ll point you to the cleansers and moisturizers that make sense for your skin, and if you picked up our in-house skincare, keep it consistent. People with sensitive skin often tell us they’re relieved when something finally feels comfortable and still gets results.
Your simple protect-and-build routine
- AM: Gentle cleanse (or rinse if you’re dry), moisturizer, SPF.
- PM: Cleanse, moisturizer. Add actives only when your start date hits.
- Habit that matters: If you’re in the sun a lot, reapply SPF. Martinez light adds up, even on breezy days by the waterfront.
And please don’t mix in a bunch of new “miracle” products because you’re motivated. If your skin glows, we want to know why.
Step 6 and 7: Follow-up timing, and when to reach out to us
Our Consultation is quick, 15 minutes, and it’s meant to give you a clear plan. The $25 fee goes toward your appointment, and if you’re booking Plasma Lift or Fibroblast, we’ll need to see you in person first. We also do video consults via Zoom, Google Meet, or Instagram if that fits your schedule better.
When to book your follow-up
Most plans do best with a check-in around 2 to 6 weeks so we can see real change and tweak what needs tweaking. If you commute through Downtown Martinez, it’s usually easy to swing by near the courthouse or Amtrak after work. We also see a lot of folks coming in from Pleasant Hill, Concord, and Walnut Creek who want a plan that actually fits real life.
What’s normal vs. what needs a message
A little dryness, mild tingling with new actives, or a short adjustment phase can happen. What we don’t want is you pushing through something that’s clearly getting worse.
Reach out to us right away if you notice severe redness, blistering, a spreading rash, or irritation that ramps up quickly instead of calming down.
“Your skin is glowing! What are you doing to it?”
One of our regulars
That kind of comment tends to show up when the plan is simple, consistent, and protected with SPF. If you have questions after your consult, let us know. And if you want a deeper dive on what the Consultation includes, take a look at our Consultation services guide in Martinez.
Need a quick follow-up? We’ll help you figure out if you should pause a product, patch test again, or schedule that next step.
